The Works

Symmetrys have been appointed to carry out the Structural and Civil Engineering on this new hotel project in Southwark, London. The site is 1045 square metres in size and the existing building on the site is a two storey plus basement, post war concrete infill fronting Lower Marsh. The proposed scheme will replace the existing structure with a high quality architectural building of mixed uses, which includes retail units at the Ground Floor and a new three-storey 79 bed hotel above.

The site is currently 1960s concrete framed retail units with a basement and Symmetrys will be investigating how the existing basement and foundations might be reused for the new scheme.

Symmetrys have adopted a reinforced concrete frame of flat slabs and blade columns to maximise the freedom of partition layouts and services distribution, both initially and for future refurbishments. The top storeys though will be steel framed with composite floors and roofs to minimise the size of structural elements in the open plan, glazed floors.

Symmetrys will also be required when establishing construction sequencing due to the adjoining occupied buildings at either end of the site, particularly regarding new basement works. Site works are due to begin in January 2018.
