Symmetrys was appointed the structural and civil engineers for this new religious building in Barking, London. Built on a brownfield, contaminated site, the new development included a basement car park and three storeys above ground.
The building houses two worship spaces known as Diwans, a religious dining area known as a Langar, along with educational and day-care facilities. Lastly, a Sach Khand, a landmark tower housing the scriptures, forms the centre of the elevation.
The main structural challenges were to achieve clear spans of 25m across the dining and worship spaces, plus adding two storey high roof lights to bring light down through the building. Concealed modern structures were used to facilitate the traditional Sikh Temple architecture throughout, all within a tight budget.
