Beatties – The Image that Inspired the Design

August 2024

A recently located historic image has played a key role in shaping the design direction for the redevelopment of the Beatties building in Wolverhampton. The image was found by Jessica Swinton of Symmetrys during extensive research at the Wolverhampton Archives.

Jess’s investigation of the site’s historic records proved invaluable, enabling the design team to optimise their proposals significantly. By placing massing on buildings with the capacity to support it, the team was able to reduce the need for structural strengthening by 90% compared to previous plans.

The original image of the building’s front elevation, found by Jess, has become the cornerstone of the design for the newly submitted Section 73 (S73) application. The design not only reflects the building’s historical character but also incorporates modern elements, blending the old with the new.

Symmetrys worked closely with the architectural firm Corstorphine & Wright, whose work is essential in bringing the project to life. The team’s combined efforts have ensured that the redevelopment honours the heritage of the iconic Beatties building while adapting it for contemporary use.

The S73 application marks a significant milestone in the project, which seeks to revitalise the historic site while preserving its unique character.
