The Works

Symmetrys was the structural engineers for this new pavilion at the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes, Isle of Wight.

The pavilion, in the grounds of Cowes Castle, houses the restaurant and clubhouse, which are recessed into the natural slope overlooking the start line of the Regatta.

The pavilion is shaped to resemble a boat’s hull and a marquee, with a curved exposed steel frame supporting the roof, a planted terrace and the retractable tensile roof over the courtyard.

Careful detailing of the steelwork was required to achieve the architectural intent of invisible connections in the corrosive sea-front environment. The project received a Civic Trust award. Symmetrys extended the pavilion by enclosing part of the terrace with a new fabric-roofed bar.
